Mamá Empoderada is an NIMH-funded pilot randomized controlled trial to assess the acceptability and preliminary effectiveness of an evidence-based mental health prevention and positive parenting intervention on mental health and parenting outcomes among in-transit mothers with young children at the Mexico-U.S. border.

'Mom Power’ is an evidence-based intervention originally developed by the Zero to Thrive program at the University of Michigan. Working in close partnership with our community partners, we successfully adapted this intervention to meet the unique mental health and parenting challenges faced by in-transit mothers in the U.S.-Mexico border city of Tijuana.

Amid rising population displacement and prolonged and traumatic journeys, this study addresses an urgent need for scalable and tailored mental health prevention for in-transit mothers with young families.

Study Aims

Aim 1

Adapt and refine the ‘Mamá Empoderada’ intervention with migrant mothers with young children in the Mexico-U.S. border context

Aim 2

Assess the acceptability of the adapted intervention and estimate its effects on symptoms of depression, anxiety and parenting stress

Aim 3

Explore which theory-based mechanisms of action (e.g. social support, parental resilience etc.) predict changes in symptoms of depression, anxiety and parenting stress
